Latest News

Coming up in this week's newsletter we have an update on Project Clubfit, a sparkling new Ryan Done Lesson offer, a report on Jack Senior's travels to South Africa, Jockey and Fish's testing report and much more.

Over a week has passed since our Club's AGM and we would like to officially extend a welcome to the new Captain, Stuart Bradley. Refreshingly Stuart is fairly new to the trials and tribulations of being a Club Captain, but we welcome him with open arms. Stu is a good lad so I'm sure once you get to know him you might be joining him on a trip to Ibiza! In the ladies section we welcome new Lady Captain, Andrea Peacock. Andrea is well known amongst our members, but for those not aware Andrea is an ex-England international, joining Jack as the only other Heysham member to achieve that feat. We look forward to working with Andrea and helping rack up her bar bill with her partially sober other half Graeme (think I spelt that right).

We have also enjoyed working with the new manager Ed as he settles into life here at Heysham, with Ed's help we have in fact landed an exciting sponsorship that will be announced very shortly commencing next month. I won't say too much about it but everyone's favourite loof Jack Cowell has something to do with it. Enjoy this week's newsletter, packed with offers, projects and more!

The Swing Lounge

Swing LoungeWhat a week we have had in the Swing Lounge, it has been packed most days and every evening and the feedback has been consistent with one thing - what a laugh! Exactly what we had in mind when we decided to build the lounge, we wanted people to come up to enjoy golf for what it truly is; a hobby. Socially this room is excellent for people to come and play in nice weather, have a laugh with friends and keep the swing going when the course isn't such a nice place to be. Our climate sees to that! What we also see in the future for the Swing Lounge is times when a few of you can have a few beers and relax on a weekend evening, something that has been popular in it's two weeks of being open. Tomorrow night we have a group of 10 coming in, may be a challenge but it is sure to be a good laugh for all involved! As our site is under maintenance you can book by giving us call on 01524 852000, check out the prices below, members can play for as cheap as £4!

One player - Peak - £15 per hour. Off-peak - £12 per hour.
Two players - Peak - £10 per hour. Off-peak - £8 per hour.
Three plus players - Peak - £7 per hour. Off-peak - £6 per hour.

Prices are per person, per hour. HGC members receive a £2 discount per hour and there is also a 10% student discount available.

We have watched plenty of golfers now use the Lounge and one thing is clear; you guys need to keep the driver in the bag! My tip of the week for the Swing Lounge is to hit some fairway-woods to get the ball in play, especially on some of these courses that are designed for Tour use!

The Winter League is also off and running, those that have put themselves down if you can contact us to get your first rounds booked. As long as you get all eight done by the end (which will be early April) you don't need to panic, but the room does book up quickly, so get booking. Anyone can still enter simply by giving me a call, £40 per person for eight courses (9 holes per course), in a pairs format and no extra fees. We have a £2,000 prizefund waiting for you!

Project Clubfit

Dave Hutchinson and his team have been magnificent (he told me to say that), but in all honesty they have been wonderful in helping to create our vision of the Short Game Academy at Heysham. Some of you may not even recognise it once you venture up, but believe me it has been completely transformed. Next week we are meeting with the Astroturf company to finalise the details for securing all the turf needed, before it is then installed. I am so excited by this area, the potential for better golfers, more practice, more lessons and the fact our members are getting this all in their membership package is great. In the past on our old chipping green we had space for a only a few people to use it at any one time, these new facilities will create space for up to 20 users at the same time. This week the areas housing the turf for pitching into the green have been bedded in and given a small facelift, check out some pictures and as always feel free to pop for a chat about these new incoming facilities.

HGC Brick Legacy

THIS WEEKEND is your last chance to get a personal HGC brick for only £59. You can have your name in gold letters at Heysham Golf Club forever - the only chance some of you will have of having your name in gold letters (sorry couldn't resist). Forms are available in the pro shop, behind the bar and also in the office. All the money raised from these bricks is going towards the re-surfacing of pathways around the clubhouse and near the professional shop. Outside the pro shop is where the bricks will be housed, speak to one of our staff for more information or click here to send us an email for more details

Caught with his trousers down...

Having broken all records getting from Claughton to Heysham I entered the shop just in time to hear Linda tell Trevor to put his trousers on. Trevor appeared from the back of the shop red faced.... I wasn't sure if this was because he had been caught with his trousers down or the fact he was going to deliver the news to me that I wasted my time as the clubs to be tested were locked in Ryan's teaching room. I arranged to meet Ryan later that evening although he looked none too pleased! I wasn't sure if this was the fact we were going to use his prized posessions or he was worried how many balls Fish would hit out of the range this week... it just wasn't long enough for last week's driver. Having returned after a healthy Chicken and Chips we were handed a Cobra King F6 Driver and 7-iron.

Cobra King F6 driver - set to 10.5 with a stiff shaft

This driver is adjustable and the loft can be altered from 9 to 12 degrees. However we were unable to test this function as the ratchet was missing!

From my point of view this driver performed better than last week's but I am sure that is more to do with my dodgy swing rather than anything to do with the clubs. Although I felt the PING looked better this certainly went better. Shots were straighter and I felt longer. There was a good solid feel at impact... sorry I am sounding like somebody who knows what they are talking about. A club I would definitely recommend.

Fish again was impressed but there was no match made in heaven this week although he said he wouldn't kick it out of bed! Again he felt it went well and he had good control, although I am not sure he felt that with the shot that went straight left out of the bay. The black gloss finish looked good and like me he felt it was solid at impact... he too is getting carried away with this reviewing lark.

Looks
- Fish - 8. Jockey - 7.
Feel - Fish - 8. Jockey - 8.
Accuracy - Fish - 9. Jockey - 9.

Cobra King F6 - 7-iron - with a regular shaft

The first thing Fish noticed about this club was that you certainly felt a miss-hit... I had to take his word for this. The look was great and they felt nice in the hand. The accuracy was good and the ball flight was similar to last week's irons. Fish wouldn't swap these for his current irons but felt they were a really nice club and worth a try.

I had to agree with Fish that there was a feeling in your hands when you struck the ball. This was not apparent with last week's irons. Again though they were accurate and distance seemed comparable to both last week's 7-iron and my own. I too liked the look but like Fish I wouldn't swap these for my current irons.

Jack Senior Update

It has been a while since we last spoke about Jack as he has had time off to practice and re-charge his batteries during the off-season. This last week Jack was in South Africa competing on the main tour, offering him a chance to pick up some Euros and an early season boost as he looks towards 2016 on the Challenge Tour. Jack started strongly carding a one under round to put himself inside the top 20 round this Pretoria course; included in the field were some big name players such as eventual winner Charles Schwartzel. A +4 round of 74 followed in round two, giving Jack enough to make the cut but with a bitter taste of a round which could have given him much more to be cheerful about. But, making the cut was the aim for Jack and he did just that giving him a chance to push up the leaderboard over the weekend. Jack closed with a 73 and a 72 to finish the tournament on +8, a couple of doubles over the weekend meant he couldn't quite get into the top 50. With 2016 just beginning in golfing terms making the cut was mission accomplished for Jack, who I'm sure will be disappointed he didn't finish higher, but we are confident he will have more chances to prove himself on the big tour in the next 12 months!
