Latest News

I hope you are all enjoying the Euros as much as I am, despite being a golf fanatic who can complain at three International Football matches per day? Unfortunately, as the build up to England vs. Wales gathers pace so does my lack of enthusiasm for the match; as I will miss most of it! Duty calls as I will be coaching at Yealand Primary School, running an after school class, further to that on Monday I will actually coach a WHOLE school in an all-day introduction to golf. Myself and Ryan regularly go into local schools in a bid to boost numbers in golf, should you want your school or your child's school to get involved contact me here.

In other Clubfit Golf News we have introduced some new leaflets promoting the services we offer including lesson prices. There has been no increase in our lesson prices, however, we have introduced a couple of new options so please pick up a leaflet when you're next in. Look out for our coaching and custom fitting events coming up in the next few weeks and read on to discover a simple tip to help your chipping in the next few weeks. I will lead into the newsletter giving you this simple thought; how many shots in your round would you play from under 100 yards? I would estimate between 60-75% and then ask yourself; do I practice my putting, chipping and pitching 75% of the time? Enjoy the read.

Members News

HGC took a groovy trip to the 60's and 70's last Friday as a group of our lady members celebrated the birthdays of Jacky Hogburn and Christine Ingram. Both of the babes pictured were celebrating their 70th with a 9 hole competition, some food and then gallons of wine.

Not on Facebook? Here is our special Facebook report for last weekend's 5th Medal. This week our members will be battling in teams taking part in the Fred Bland Trophy on Saturday and a special team event on Sunday. The Fred Bland is a pairs stableford format providing an option to get your name up in lights.

The halfway house was open for business this week for three days in a row prompting calls for the Vatican to respond to claims the end is nigh. The four horseman have been spotted further raising alarm in the area, however, they are stuck in traffic in Torrisholme Road.

On to the golf, where scoring was lower than the number of clubs in Josh Corless' bag. In Division One alone there was 15 scores under par, not Adam Bell though. He managed 84 attempts in an effort to shoot a good score; you'll get there Adam. Continuing his great form for 2016 was rules buff and part time door destroyer Ronnie Webster, a Division One win this week for the retired fireman; his 70 gross puts his handicap at 4.9 for the first time. In second place was Ryan Wood, a great round of 71 ironically following another night of boozing, similar to Seve Day. Luckily for Ryan he works at the power station so his two hours in work followed by being fed grapes by an apprentice whilst sat in the sauna meant he has recovered well.

Youngster John Wilding pulled in a 68, the lowest gross of the day and a score which sees his handicap drop to 3. John is on the fast track to the Clayton Trophy Team. There were a few further good scores in Division One, ex-happy Mount Park member Lee Thompson shooting a level par 70 and a better round from darts journeyman Simon Robinson, a 71. Matthew Bargh shot a great 69, with a putt to go -4 on the 14th slipping by the hole. Peter Smith NR'd on Sunday despite recently admitting his putting had returned. But with his latest comeback being shorter than his last marriage Peter may be in for a long summer. Look out for his son Rob who may return to the golf course in the next week, depending if he's allowed by his girlfriend.

In Division Two the scoring went low, so low in fact that a 64 nett didn't even make the top three. Now just imagine if Adrian Lockhart would have had a 64 and finished fourth, take a moment to imagine how many Facebook statuses that would have brought about. The winner was the generous Geoff Leatham, (73 - 12 - 61) is a great score and for some reason I felt even more happy for Geoff on this occasion. Maybe that's because second place was reserved for Joseph Cadwell. Joseph has worked hard at his game this season, lowering his pizza intake to five a week and getting more passes off his misses weekly to play golf than most men get in their lives. A great round for the lad, 74 - 12 - 62 actually puts him back in Division One and out of the 'Division of Cowns' as he quoted to me this morning. In third was Gav Beckett, impressively shooting 77 - 13 - 64 in his latest comeback since a leg break. I'm not sure how long he didn't play for, but fair play to coming back and playing some good golf.

Division Three provided only a few golfers to beat their handicap and of those Matt Greer doing the best job. 91 - 23 - 68 picking up a one shot victory to Peter Bracewell. Peter's 88 - 19 - 69 was enough to see his handicap go down to 18. In third place was youngster Jack Huntington, 89 - 20 - 69, a great score in dodgy conditions and with Maxi towing alongside most probably smelling of doner meat and beer. I don't often mention too many bad rounds in Division Three because they can happen as often as a power station coffee break, but ladies and gentleman can we applaud Dan Hodges. The wet bandits member having 101 blows round the golf course, pulling what he called, 'a Clarke-o'. Twos were worth £6.90 with John Wilding managing four. Impressive.

Raffle results - First place - Kev Helme (£55), second place - S. Ward (£35), third place - M. Bargh (£25) and in fourth place - Bob Patten (£15).

Tips from the team

Trev's Tips

You may be one of the many reading this who struggles regularly with chipping around the green on small chip shots that require a delicate touch and crisp strike. YOU ARE NOT ALONE! I regularly come across the same issues when giving a short game lesson that people often accelerate very quickly or decelerate into the ball bringing with it the dreaded 'knee drop'. These two tempo problems come from the brains and issues with seeing the ball on often tight lies requiring you to strike the ball softly and delicately. Two things then happen:

  1. The brain has panic attack sending signals to the body to drop towards the ball (hence the knee drop).
  2. You lose your rhythm culminating in the aforementioned acceleration problems. You know the shots you then hit, the low fast thin, a scuff or a tremendous double-hit.

Below is four part picture of a simple drill to help you cure this problem, but remember YOU need to put the practice in to make this work.

  • Step One - Use a small tee and have the ball pegged up as you would on a par three iron shot.
  • Step Two - Keep the knees as straight as possible allowing for a slight flex so you aren't too uncomfortable.
  • Step Three - Use the body, rather than the arms, to execute the shot. Work on keeping the arms in a V shape.
  • Step Four - Keep your tempo slow, your aim is to sweep the tee with your body controlling the speed of the shot.
  • Step Five - Aim to finish with your chest looking towards the target and your arms in the same position as you started the shot.

Keep your knees from over flexing and remember sweep the ball of the tee taking no divot, let the sole and the clubs natural bounce and loft hit the shot. Let me know how you get on! If you are still struggling and would like to book a lesson with one of the team, please click here to get in touch.
