The big news of this week was undoubtedly our very own Jack Senior qualifying for the Open at Troon. Jack had scores of 69 and 70 to finish on -5 blowing away the field in a three shot victory. The quality of players there coupled with the fact that there is only three spots available makes this qualifying event unbelievably hard to advance in. Jack started on the 10th hole, a narrow par three and after a pulled tee shot his ball outrageously got stuck in a tree; a double bogey start for the bear. But a rally of birdies followed including the tough opening holes on the front nine and Jack ended round one on -3. Sitting in a tie for third it looked like the scoring could go either way, could -3 be enough after round two or would 'The Bear' need to go lower; these questions can affect your game plan.
Starting on the first Jack started with a sloppy bogey and dropped another in an opening front nine of 38. Unbelievably the Challenge Tour star then made a double bogey matching his round one effort and sliding him down to +1 for the event. Standing on the 11th tee Jack made a choice to attack the par five in waiting, a long curving hole with little room for error and a hole that screams out for a nudged 3-iron tee shot into the fairway. Jack smashes driver over the corner into the slim fairway, slides a 6-iron to 2 feet and pops it in for eagle; bear attack incoming. The next four holes are tight par fours requiring accuracy, precision and patience. Jack frequently carried two out of the three and duly birdied three of the four, sitting him on -4 after 15 holes of the second round. Even three pars on the closing holes would have been enough but Jack felt he could squeeze another birdie on the par five 17th, a couple of 3-irons and a wedge giving him a simple putt to move to -5. A par at the last and a couple of deep breaths, maybe even a fist pump and a rare toothy smile from the big man. In the last eight holes, at a tough, tight and lengthy Hillside Jack had produced flawless golf in a pressure cooker environment to qualify for our Open at Royal Troon. An event which has gone from dreams to reality for our Heysham man, the shining star of this golf club and hopefully the start of better things to come.
I will also leave you with this image, paint the picture of it in your mind and you will understand what drives a golfer of Jack's ability. I grew up playing with Jack, sometimes I would beat him, most times he would beat me, but a friendship based around golf would often help each other improve. One game we often played was a putting competition in a strokeplay format round our putting green. The competition was named, 'The four Majors' and it required four laps round the putting green per Major starting with of course the Masters. I'm not sure whether one of us ever did the Grand Slam on one of those long summer days, but rest assured we would try dig in and kick each others ass when it came to the third Major of the event, The Open. Fast forward 15 years and that putting competition is now a reality for one of us, however I will be there cheering him on, supporting him and most likely riding his coat tails under the ropes. I hope many of you can make it up at some point to cheer on our very own, Jack Senior.
The picture is from Tuesday at Hillside where Ryan gave me a hole by hole blow of Jack's day as him and Callum followed him round. The qualification is particularly sweet of course for Ryan as Jack's coach following on from years of hard work, the lessons, the support and always on hand to offer his expertise. Ryan has quickly called in some favours and is going up for the week in a motor home to be there for Jack and also to hopefully coach Jack to victory!

Linda unfortunately didn't produce the same golf this year, which was highlighted by a nine hole score of 64 in the afternoon after 13 blows at the first, I said I wouldn't mention it though...
Congratulations also to junior Lucas Done who will be taking part in a Lancashire match vs. Durham on Monday, 11 July making him officially the best golfer in the household (dad is in last place).
