Latest News

Clayton Trophy fever has gripped the nation this week after an eventful finish to the 2016 qualifying season for the annual triangular event. For those who aren't aware, the scratch competition pits Heysham against local clubs Morecambe and Lancaster, in an eight man team event featuring a morning of foursomes and an afternoon of singles. This year Heysham will host the event on Saturday, 13 August with play commencing at 9am and the afternoon singles kicking off at 1.30pm. We expect Heysham to be packed with our members cheering on the team, but all are welcome and hopefully the other two teams will be well supported. Well done to our selected team who qualified, including some youngsters making their debuts in this prestigious event. Yours truly played in the event from 2005-2007 as a fresh faced youngster, I actually picked up two wins out of the three with one particular highlight being a 1-under score (Heysham was previous a par 69) of 68 in the foursomes event in 2006; 10 years ago, time has truly flown by. I have included a snippet from our 2005 victory which was featured in the Visitor. Read on to find out about our 2016 team, how they qualified after Sunday's 36-hole scratch event.

This weekend is a busy one for us guys as we host a Seniors' Open today, a Men's Open tomorrow and a Medal event on Sunday, a busy welcome back for Mrs D after a week away with the family (be sure to mention that, it will wind her up). I can't speak however, as I will be away from next Wednesday so expect to find a Mrs D special newsletter next week with, hopefully, input from the guru Mr Done. As for this week you will find out the Clayton Team, more on our upcoming events, our Summer Sale and much, much more. Enjoy!

Members' News

First of all, congratulations to our 2016 Clayton team that includes: Simon Robinson, Rob Smith, John Wilding, Matty Bargh, Ryan Grimshaw, Lee Thompson, Adrian Lockhart and Mark Walsh. Our non-playing captain Tony Johnson will be our reserve after he just missed out on qualification by a whisker. Veterans Simon Robinson and Ryan Grimshaw will partner up, with regular faces Rob Smith and Adrian Lockhart completing another pairing. Lee Thompson, in his second outing for Heysham, will partner the returning Mark Wlash. Youngsters John Wilding and Matty Bargh competing in their first Clayton Trophy will look to make a name for themselves on the day, a pairing which I expect to flourish. John Wilding gets a special mention for becoming possibly the youngest Clayton Trophy team member and seemingly the youngest Scratch Champion with his victory on Sunday. The event was tight with John only winning on a card-playoff to 2007 champion Adrian Lockhart. Well done guys. A big well done also to Matty Hartley for his Stayers Cup win and also to Martin Fagan for his Stenkrith Trophy victory, I will look forward to presenting those guys with their trophies in November.

Check out the picture of our Clayton Trophy shirt for 2016, these can be purchased in the shop or why not pick up another 'club blue' shirt with many choices available in store.

Another mention to our budding junior section as Lucas will represent Lancashire again, but this time is joined by his brother Curtis as they will wear the red rose on Thursday, 4 August, we will keep you updated on their progress. Charlie Colville, even younger than the Dones must get a mention for his second placed finish in the Lancashire U14 Champonships at Southport Old Links, his nett score of 69 also knocked his handicap down and, as his coach, I see a very bright future for the boy!

If you would like your personal triumphs, scores, competition wins or team matches mentioned please come see me or click here to send me a quick email and I will feature you in our members' section.

Academy news

Jack Senior Latest

Jack has a disappointing week in France last week and was probably feeling a bit down, which is why it was great to see him practicing before his trip to Northern Ireland. Jack worked on a few things with his swing and hopefully he can find some form in the thick of the season. As I write this, he is level par through nine holes in the rain delayed Tayto Open.
