Latest News

Tomorrow the Clayton Trophy rolls into town as the annual event lands on the coveted grounds of Heysham GC for the first time since 2013. The last time it was held here the team sneaked past Morecambe and Lancaster to have the big shield sit proudly on the wall in the clubhouse, something we all wish will happen again. You may have already seen the timings a few times, but I have added them below this section as a refresh, however we will have programmes available on the day for those attending. We hope to see plenty of you up and around the course cheering on the team. Speaking of the course, Dave and his team are preparing it today hence the course being closed for a few hours in the morning, we expect to see it in gorgeous condition tomorrow. Thanks to those members who have helped out on a few odd jobs around the course and clubhouse, as I drove in this morning I witnessed Nick Lamb and John Dobson sweeping grass outside the main entrance. Couple of troopers! I have mentioned a brief bit about our team in previous newsletters, which you can go back and read through our website, but now all that is left to say is good luck to our team. Come on the HGC boys.

Members' News

I was away this week so I missed out on the competitions that were packed into the last seven days, however, I can report on a few players who excelled and picked up some wins. The Tony Dent competition is a 36 hole event now split over two days and is an increasingly hard event to win, with no divisional split often a lower handicapper does come out on top. This year was no different as two fine displays by Josh Corless meant a board competition victory for the club snapper. It is nice to see a return to form for Josh as his year hasn't been great and undoubtedly a man of his talent should be donning the HGC shirt for tomorrow's Clayton Trophy. Gross scores off 69 and 71 meant his 134 nett total was enough for a win sneaking past Clayton boys Rob Smith and Ryan Grimshaw. The change in weather from a calm sunny Saturday to a wild and windy Sunday meant the low handicappers fared better including a lowest of the weekend 66 gross by Rob. Well done to Gareth Holmes for his round one victory, scoring 80 - 17 =  63 and Malcolm Stockwell in round two with a 88 - 21 = 67. Well done to all winners.

On Wednesday a re-arranged medal was held after it was called off for thunder and lightning several weeks ago, sadly happening on the day I was flying home. Nevertheless, it was great to see some great scores from the Clayton boys including division one winner Matty Bargh. His 66 - 2 = 64, a lowest of the season was enough for victory despite a few good scores from Scott Lee, Mark Charnley and Anthony Palmer. Anthony won't want me to mention his double-double finish in this newsletter that's for sure. Well done to Daniel Weatherill for a great score of 79 - 13 = 66 awarding him victory in division two and Ted Richardson, a 93 - 21 = 72 enough for victory in division three.

A great week for Heysham again in 2016 as our Lunesdale League team won the league coasting to victory before the dust even settle on the 2016 league season. Led by Josh Smith, our team managed the highest total the league has seen for many years and is a testament to our hard working golfers and to the team captain Josh. The league is not an easy one to win, so well done to the boys! Click here for more information on the league season.

There's always going to be an element of luck with any hole-in-one, but this is something else! Sadly for Thomas Bjørn, it won't go down as a competitive ace.. Still… worth a watch.
