If you live in a box, you may have missed the golf last weekend, but I'm sure the rest of you had an exciting Sunday night sat in front of the TV. Sergio was a popular, worthy winner, providing some of the best closing shots to a Major in recent memory. Charles Schwartzel in 2011 on his birdie charge is often forgotten about, but Sergio's shots under pressure were outstanding. Did anyone also mention it was Seve's birthday? An interesting thing to occur was a final group of a Major both using a non-conventional 'claw' grip when putting... I will take a look at the advantages of such a grip and how it may help your game.
Justin Rose is also a new user of 'AimPoint', a system recently becoming well known for reading greens. I don't know too much about this system, other than the mathematics behind it work, however reading putts with a book and the time it can take doing so puts me off. What about the stat of Freddie Couples averaging 20 yards further with driver than he did during his win in 1992? Sounds obvious with new technology, but Freddie is 58 years old... Could technology in balls and clubs be too much for the guys on Tour?

The Fred Bland Trophy was surprisingly won by President Phil Foster and the loved up Baz Simcox with a solid total of 45 points this past Sunday. The duo couldn't muster many twos in the Winter League these past two years, but came together to win the second board competition of the season. I put it down to the clubs of Baz which were recently re-gripped by the expert staff here at Clubfit Golf. These two also picked up a win in our Masters Sweep after drawing Thomas Pieters; his -4 score boosted their 45 total to 49. This bagged them £30 each in the shop, with three teams tied on second all receiving £9 each. Results are posted on our Facebook page, where you can also receive daily updates from Clubfit Golf.
Twenty-something of our members also traveled to Cheshire on Sunday for an overnight stay at Portal including two rounds of golf and a fair few beers. Not being one to gossip, or report on such events I have decided only to mention several little tidbits. Arnie Duckworth being a gift that keeps on giving carried on his form seen in his last 20 trips away from Heysham. Two points in nine holes. Say no more.
Greg Anderson booked his place on the 'dumpty bus', but then escaped to a nearby working man's club to take part in the part in the quiz.... the lengths people go to. In his absence Stuart Brainsby drank Greg's share of beer, resulting in a bathroom slip, a busted nose and a trip to A&E. Well done Brains, must of been the dangerous tiles in place. All in all, the trip cementing what is well known about Heysham golfers... raging alcoholics with no golfing talent, but bloody good on trips away!

I spoke earlier about the claw grip used by both Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia during the Masters. In fact, it can be a regular occurrence to see this strange grip doing the rounds of the main tours. I believe the first time I saw it used in a particular way was by Chris DiMarco, a name you don't often see crop up anymore. This grip has some advantages, but can also limit you in other ways, here's a few reasons why it works:
The left hand (for a right hand putter) grips the handle in its lifeline producing a mirror image with the clubface.
The left hand is often the leader of a putting stroke, keeping this solid can produce an excellent face-to-path relationship.
The right hand (claw) becomes a guide, literally guiding the left hand into position during the stroke.
On fast greens and from short distances, this grip becomes solid, alleviating any movements of the hands during the stroke.
This lack of movement can stop a sudden acceleration of the right hand, often seen as almost a twitch (can feel like a yip).
It creates a very solid rocking motion during the stroke, taking out wrist movement and creating a leader in the left hand. However, it can lead to a loss of feel on the longer putts, finding it hard to gauge distance from 30 feet and out. This is generally because the right hand is the feeler of the stroke, something which Tiger Woods advocates with his one handed putting drills before he plays.
