Pros news

Latest News

The US Open is upon us, held for the first time at Erin Hills, the course which hosted Jack Seniors' victory over Jordan Spieth in his US Amateur Championship semi-final finish in 2011. The course is long, the longest in Major Championship history with 'fescue' rough running up to your knees, snakey bunkers littering the fairways and greens which could run up to 14 on the stimp; sounds impossible. The course is fairly generous however off the tee, the length will be offset by hard ground conditions and humid temperatures, so expect to see some drives from the likes of DJ flirting with 400 yards. I'd love to let you in on a sneaky pick, but I'm scratching my head deciphering who may have the tools needed to master this ominous beast. I feel like Rickie Fowler would be a good bet, based on his driving stats for 2017 and him having an all-round solid game including the putter. The USGA always have an almost perverted way of which their Major should be won, swapping from short tight courses to wide open links style courses in an effort to stand side-by-side with The Open. Don't forget this course is only 11 years old, a man made links nowhere near a coast line. So with that in mind it's no wonder why we aren't focusing too much on the players in the lead up to this event, but the course itself. It is going to make for some very interesting viewing over the weekend.

Although he did feature on this course in 2011, Jack won't be there this week, instead he will be hoping to keep up his form in recent events as he competes in the Hauts de France Open at Saint-omer Golf Club. Make sure you download the European Tour App via their website to follow Jack hole-by-hole. Jack has also spoke recently with the Daily Mail in an interview about his 2011 US Amateur Championship visit. Click here to read more.

Enjoy a word from Ryan this week, why gapping is important to your game and last minute deals for Father's Day plus some new offers available in the Clubfit shop at Heysham.

Members' News

We have had a couple of medals in the space of a week and they brought up some polar opposite weather conditions. Despite the dodgy weather we still saw some amazing scores, special mention must go to Tony Johnson who managed a win last Wednesday, then another Sunday following it up with a third place finish yesterday with a 69 gross. More results can be found on the main noticeboard, or check out our Facebook page featuring a report for yesterday's medal if you fancy a laugh. Speaking of Tony, members will be aware of Pro-Am-Am on Saturday, 1 July which Tony organises every year, the day is pretty much full with a couple spaces for the morning shotgun available. If you would like to be a reserve for the day, please contact us in the pro shop here.

Unfortunately, we have also had some very sad news reach the club this week as member and ex-Lady Captain Jean Copley (previously Irving) passed away following a long courageous battle with illness. The funeral will be held at Beetham Crematorium on Wednesday, 21 June at 3:30pm and Heysham Golf Club afterwards. Jean's husband Roger invites everyone back to Heysham Golf Club and in keeping with the spirit of Jean that you don't wear black. On behalf of Clubfit Golf we would like to pass our condolences onto Roger and their families.

Academy news

Why knowing your yardages is important?

Do you know your yardages? You may think you do, but I can tell you you won't. Bernhard Langer once asked a Ryder Cup rookie's caddie if a yardage he had given him was from the front or the back of a sprinkler, that is knowing your yardages! It is even more important to know your yardages from under 100 yards, ever notice why Professionals on Tour lay up quite far back of a par five if they can't reach? That is so they can leave themselves a full shot. Ask yourself, how far you hit each club and then how many times you wind up short of a green? You can join the above Gapping Day for only £25 and find out your yardages. As for me, check out below my yardages with my wedges...

  • 50 degree - 112 yards, 3/4 shot will travel 95 yards and a half shot will travel 75 yards.
  • 54 degree - 103 yards, 3/4 shot will travel 90 yards and a half shot will travel 65 yards.
  • 58 degree - No full shot, 3/4 will travel 80 yards and a half shot will travel 50 yards.

Three clubs, eight yardages. Do you know yours? Click here to book your gapping session today.

A word with the Coach...

What a nostalgic week I've had this past seven days. Firstly, can I congratulate my mentor, inspiration and a top man in Trevor Foster who has become Lancashire County Seniors' Champion. I caddied for Trevor from the age of 13 back in my Accrington days as Trevor played in some big events on his way to a collection of over 100 county caps as well as countless wins in his amateur career. You may have heard before, but I also caddied for Trevor in the 1988 British Open when I was only 14, it was a huge privilege to do so and now an even bigger privilege to be his coach, bringing our friendship almost full circle. I'm very proud of the big man. A massive 'big up' also goes to Tony Johnson for two wins in a week and a return to form. Tony was my foursomes partner for Lancashire Boys, a great guy and friend as well as the biggest reason why i came to Heysham Golf Club; much respect pal.

The group of US returnees have been here this week. It was great to catch up firstly with Meg Cullen, swinging it lovely and soon to be destroying the Heysham Course... look out ladies. I also caught up yesterday with Adam Stone, Jack Clarkson and Chris Carney who have all joined as Academy members whilst they are back in the UK, making use of all our facilities here at Heysham. You may see them around a bit, but don't worry I don't expect them to lose any of our Pro V1 balls. Good luck to Adam who will be taking part in the Amateur Championship next week.

Lastly, best of luck to Jack in France who now has five tournaments on the spin including three really good venues suited to Jack's game. This course in France isn't best suited to Jack, but a top 25 would be brilliant and is the current aim. Keep up the hard work everyone and let's hope for some better weather after a week of wind and rain!
