It's Clayton Trophy week, excitement is building and until today so were the rain clouds. However, it looks like we may have escaped a damp day watching our boys in blue, if you do feel like supporting the boys, play will commence from 9am with the morning foursomes. |
Lancaster Golf Club hosting this event welcomes all spectators, so please come down and cheer on all the players taking part. Unfortunately, our very own team member Lee Tomlinson has suffered an accident at work that now rules him out to play, reserve Mark Walsh will step in, we feel for you Lee.
If you're a Heysham supporter, you can pick up a blue Clayton Trophy shirt at a low cost of only £20. These shirts aren't the exact same as the Team but proudly boast our logo. We only have six left, so act fast! It's Rory’s last shot this week as well, our fourth and final major of the year starts today in its last year based in August before it moves to May in 2019. Interestingly it is not on any TV channels as online sports company eleven sports have got the rights to host the event. You can stream the first two days for free via their website. Come on Tiger! Enjoy this week's read |

Johnson wins the Tony Dent Trophy
A big congratulations to Tony Johnson who finally won the Tony Dent Trophy, the 36-hole nett event held over the entirety of last weekend. After successfully signing in, Tony produced two superb rounds of 69-3-66 and 70-3-67 to land the trophy, but also reduce his handicap back down to two in a season where he will openly admit, had been a struggle. But with that success I hope Tony pushes on and takes some end of season form forward into next year. I won't mention his spine being collected on the last four holes on Sunday though.

Course work week
This next week the green staff will be heavily working on our golf course. Monday and Tuesday will see the heaviest amount on the green, so please expect some greens to be closed during these days. With this expected and quiet days ahead, the kitchen will be closed both days, so please make other arrangements for food if you plan to come up and play. The course work will continue Wednesday onwards but with busier days and less disruptions. Thank you in advance for your understanding and course care.

The club is now officially affiliated with the University and we look forward to welcoming them as members in the future. You can follow them on Facebook by searching for Lancaster University Golf Society.

A famous victory Trevor Foster
Ryan’s lifelong friend, early mentor and now student pulled off an absolute storming win last week when he won the British Seniors Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl. Trevor finished on 208 for three rounds on -8, and was officially the only man under par for the three-round event. His first round of -9 was incredible, giving him a seven-shot lead that he never saw threatened. Trevor was then back here playing for Lancashire Seniors Team against Northumberland at Heysham were Ryan was asked to caddie. For those that don't know, Ryan caddied for Trevor when he qualified for the British Open in 1987 at Royal Lytham St. Annes, so it was sweet to see him back on the bag over 30 years later. Even better, Lancashire won 9 ½ - 8 ½ on the day. |
Speaking of Lancashire, Aidan Hartin, Lucas and Curtis Done all represented the red rose against Cheshire at Congleton Golf Club. The boys help was in vain as Cheshire picked up the win.

In other junior news Lucy Moss and Jess Parker competed in a England Golf Tournament this past week. The Abraham Trophy was held at Lyme Regis Golf Club where Lucy picked up a trophy for Best Regional score. Well done to Lucy and also to Jess. |

When tour pros are playing in big events, like the PGA Championship this week, they’ll always have relatively new wedges in their bag to maximise their spin, because worn wedges mean less control.
|
| Why do grooves matter? The grooves are the sole contact point between your ball and the club, imparting backspin to help lift the ball into the air. R&D testing has revealed that after 125 rounds, wedges spin 2,000rpm less than wedges with new grooves and consequently roll 14 feet further on landing - which is huge. What causes wear? All grooves will wear slowly over time due to a number of factors, including gradual wear from play, but golf's equipment manufacturers work hard to limit this. |
| Need to upgrade? Grooves are particularly important on wedges, where pinpoint control is crucial. If yours are looking worn like on the first image above, why not consider the TaylorMade Milled Grind wedge (above), which has ZTP grooves. This design sees grooves with steeper side walls sit closer together, allowing an additional groove to be added to produce more spin than on previous models. Advanced surface milling techniques also ensure precise, consistent performance from wedge to wedge. |
