I write this with a heavy heart, but after two successive Clayton Trophy wins our boys fell at the last hurdle in bringing home a third last Saturday at Lancaster. The lads in blue fell just three shots short in the 36-hole event, coming second to Lancaster Golf Club with Morecambe finishing in third. Firstly though, a big well done to Lancaster for their victory and for presenting the course as superbly as it was on Saturday.

However, give me some notice in three years’ time and I will duly find you some board carriers to carry the scores round the golf course for each group. It meant we were a little in the dark out on the golf course supporting the teams, we had to rely on Chinese whispers to get through. Anyway, the boys were unlucky but represented Heysham proudly and but not for a few wayward shots late on, Lancaster’s stunning 18th hole being the downfall, our boys would've romped home. It was still great to see the lads in town afterwards, where I enjoyed several lime and tonics into the early hours.
A big well done to all players who took part, I loved watching and I can't wait to see you all battle it out next year |

Moving on though we can get excited about the Blenkinsop Token, the junior version of the Clayton Trophy being held Saturday, 25 August at Morecambe Golf Club. We would love to see you all there supporting our team, the first tee time on the day being at 12.30pm. A big well done to our Team of Lucas Done, Curtis Done, Jess Parker, Charlie Colville, Aidan Hartin and Tom Hamilton, plus our reserve Macy Mckinley.

The next generation shine
In other junior news one of our Blenkinsop Team, Curtis Done was victorious at the Carlisle Junior Open this week winning Best Gross. Go on the Rat.
Curtis has now qualified for the Junior Masters Final at Close House in October. It was also great to see John Wilding representing Heysham at the Boys Amateur Championship in Ireland. Although he missed out qualifying for the match play section of the event, it's still a big event to play in and he's got many more ahead. |

The perfect combination
With a quiet week at the club there was only the Norman Wray Pairs event held on Sunday. Terry Keenan and Martin Fagan getting their name up in lights with an impressive 46 points. Well done boys.
Another pairing in Rob Smith and Ryan Grimshaw represented Heysham in the Lancashire Foursomes yesterday at North Manchester Golf Club. Their score of 73 was enough to secure a third-place finish, I'm sure the fans were shouting...THE GRIM.

Keeping you up to date
You may have noticed the course work this week, the green staff working hard on hollow-tining the greens, but do you know why? Course traffic causes the ground to become compacted and hardened. This means drainage is less efficient and the grass’s roots are prevented from absorbing oxygen. Hollow-tining allows the compacted turf to expand and air and moisture to be more easily absorbed.
Tining also removes accumulated fibre in the grass’s root zone. It allows for the exchange of a poor soil for a better one through top dressing. That’s why the greens are normally covered in sandy top dressing immediately after they’re cored. Some of you have asked why this year it has been done in August instead of late September. This is due to the weather conditions as colder, wet conditions mean the holes won’t heal up properly and growth will be stunted. We know it coincides a little with the season but in a 14 days’ time you won't even notice anything.

Introducing Cleveland RTX 4 |
Trying to hit your wedge shots the same way as the pros can be frustrating, especially when you see the amount of spin they achieve from all sorts of lies. Yes, technique plays a part, but so does having a set of wedges that you can trust in every situation. |
A wedge fit for tour Available in September, Cleveland's latest wedge incorporates feedback from some of the world's best golfers, such as Graeme McDowell, to make this their most tour-authentic wedge to date. As the name suggests, the RTX 4 is the fourth generation of the RTX family, with each seemingly better than the last. Cleveland says the RTX 4 will provide ultimate short game control, thanks to increased spin generation from their sharpest grooves to date. So, if you're serious about improving around the greens, come and speak to us about a custom fitting. |
