Welcome to this week's newsletter. It's Masters week! As if you didn't know already, the Par 3 event kicking things off last night with Matt Wallace winning the rather tainted crown; no golfer has gone on to win the main event. Could the English man (one of nine in the field) go on to re-write the history books?
As always, I will be glued to the TV, feel free to hit me with your bets and who you think could cause an upset; I've got the usual £1 each way on Freddie Couples! Click here to let us know your picks. |

Speaking of history, the club this week was lucky to come upon some relics hidden beneath the sands of time. The relic being our President Baz Simcox collecting a trophy from then President Alan Armitage (could have been Captain, apologies Alan!).
We loved the rosey red cheeks Baz, or the few extra pounds you're carrying to get through the winter ahead, as the photo was taken in November 2000. This photo bares no relevance to the newsletter in general, but in the spirit of golf I thought everyone had to see it! (Sorry Baz) |

The club has become much busier in the past week due to the ever-encroaching Summer ahead and also because the weather has been quite happy! Last Saturday was particularly busy with myself and Ryan taking the first Short Game Masterclass of the season, a big Thank You to all 12 that took part. You can find out about our next one in the coaching section, plus another fitting day we have added to our diary.
This weekend the club hosts the Spring Open, if you're not yet playing; get involved. We have spaces left in the morning and the afternoon, call the Pro Shop and we will happily get you booked in. If not, we hope you enjoy the weekend, enjoy The Masters and remember that it's the official start of the golfing season.

Hard work is paying off
First of all, big shout out to HGC member Mick Croft, he scored a superb hole-in-one last Saturday at the 16th hole; his second hole in one in his industrious career. The same day the Rabbits held their Spring Comp, with some impressive scoring on show. Incredibly the old timer John Patton was victorious with 43 points, knocking Andy Tomlinson into second with an equally as impressive single stableford score of 40. Andy also took home both the nearest the pins, does this mean his expert tuition over the winter with yours truly is paying dividends? Mick Murray, also having lesson with Ryan and with a few new clubs in the bag came in third on 39 points. Well done everyone. Our second board competition of the season was also last weekend, the Fred Bland Trophy; pairs stableford event. Just like the above rabbits’ event, the scoring was hugely impressive but none more so than Jim Miller and Andrew Taylor's 48 points. Amazingly it won by only one point. Well done boys.

Heading in the right direction
I am currently the laughing stock of the golf club after "getting lost" on the Lancaster canal last Friday during my final 22-mile-long run. A little 5-mile detour and a phone call to a friend to arrange a new meeting point for collection at a cake shop and all was well. I now head into to taper, reducing the miles to let my legs recover. A 5.45am run on my birthday brought this fantastic sunrise, it was worth the get up.

A driver is a powerful beast, sometimes too powerful if a hole has a hazard within range. In this scenario, you have a plethero of options to choose from, but there is one that is often overlooked. |
Picture the scene You're stood on a par-4 tee box and there’s a water hazard 240 yards away. What do you do? Many of you will reach for your longest iron on auto-pilot, however a custom-fitted fairway wood might just be the perfect solution; getting you further down the hole and closer to the green. | |
|
Why is this often overlooked? A lot of golfers don't have confidence in hitting their fairway wood because, quite simply, they don't use it enough. But with technology to help you hit them better - such as Baffler rails in Cobra's F9 Speedback metals that help your club glide through the turf - it's time you gave them another go. |
Custom fitting is key We're delighted to see so many of you come to us for a custom fit when you're after a new driver or set of irons, but why does it stop there? A custom fitting is so important in ensuring you get the most from any new purchase, whether that's a driver, fairway wood or putter. |
