Hot off the press this past week was the Clayton Trophy; you know I'm not one to make a big deal out of it and it's just another day on the calendar. I could be saying this because Heysham didn't pick up the W, losing at home to nearby neighbours Morecambe by a mere four shots! It really was gut-wrenching to see considering the club worked so hard to keep the event on despite the horrendous weather. If you were living in a cave, you may have missed the weather that came our way in the 12 hours previous and on the day of the Clayton Trophy. The morning foursomes were reduced to nine holes in anticipation of the weather coming our way in the afternoon. The morning however was then disrupted further with a suspension in play due to some horrific downpours that looked likely to end the day early; I wouldn't have minded, early to the pub. |

The decision was made for a two-tee start for the singles, a great decision that meant it gave us a chance of getting the holes in. Each group incredibly having it's own Professional Squeegie(er). Special mention to Dave, his staff and their helpers on the day for what was a monumental task of getting the event on. Heysham had a five-shot lead heading into the singles, and that lead was intact with nine holes to play; Morecambe were not letting it slip away though. Superb scores from Tom Winn, Adam and Ste Chester meant it was firmly in their hands late on, Heysham just letting the scores slip away in the middle of the pack. The final result meant a four-shot victory with Lancaster finishing in third. Unlucky lads, you battled hard in the weather, you played with a smile and you kept going! Morecambe, brilliantly done to hold it together and out battle the two other teams. The club put on a great event, with live scoring available for people not even at the event. A special mention to all volunteers on the day, and the hard work from Captain Carl Sadler before and during the event; plus the scoreboard carriers for cracking on with the lonely, wet task of carrying the scores round for those hardy souls to see. Heysham will be back in full force next year at Morecambe and one thing's for sure; the drinking team will be there. Despite the weather, the wind, rain and the looks of despair they all cracked on with the beers on ice. It wasn't easy, but they made the event a better day and find solace in the 18th tee hut; made sure there were some laughs flying around. So here's to them, to Morecambe for the win and for all the incredible help on the day. Hats off to you all! I did have a mad dash to pick up our team shirts last Friday from DPD in Carnforth. This year, supplied by Original Penguin our shirts were due to arrive a few days before Friday but to no avail. So having endured a couple of days chasing DPD, I discovered our shirts were part of a van that tried to get back from Sunderland Point at High Tide! You know the drill if you're from around here. The 19 plate van was totally written off and a helicopter was needed. In a huge stroke of luck, our shirts fully out their box were all completely fine and I was able to get them just 24 hours before the big tee off. Phew! Enjoy this week’s read. |
Norman Wray Stableford The day after the Clayton the Norman Wray Stableford event was held. An absolute massive score meant Rob Scarr and Wayne Scarr were victorious and can officially get their names up in golf. Well done boys! The week around the Clayton is often quiet around the club, but a big well done to John Wilding who has qualified for the matchplay stage of the Boys Amateur Championship; great work!

Course update This week has seen the annual greens renovation being done. This year this included solid tining to a depth of 10 inches. This helps drainage, deep rooting and getting oxygen into the soil profile. Then the greens were scarified to remove excess organic matter. Then they were overseeded with pure bent grass to improve the composite of grasses and finally 30 tonne of sand dressing spread on to fill the holes up.

A word from the Coach
What a horrendous week for weather, a mixture of big wind and rain has meant teaching has been a little difficult; but still, it's been a great week. I've done a couple of hours with 2019 British Amateur Seniors' Champion Trevor Foster, my old mentor and all-round nice guy. He's such a great company and we did some brilliant work on his swing altering his back-swing position at the top and helping his wrist angles. This allowed us to produce more power and more yardage, his ball flight is so good! I'd like to wish him good luck at the U.S. Seniors' Open in North Carolina next week! Top performance this week as well by John Wilding qualifying for the matchplay stage in 32nd out of 200 in Saunton. The Boys Amateur Championship is the biggest event for under 18's in amateur golf and it's a superb achievement to get through this stage. You can follow John's progress online via the R&A website. I also had a great lesson on the course this week with Neil Wilkinson who plays out of Royal Lytham St. Annes. It's so easy to be defensive playing such a tough course so I'm hoping this week's course lesson gave him the confidence to be brave, trust his lines and commit to the shot. Lastly, I'm looking forward to holding a 'What’s in the bag' session this weekend, a new group event where we work on a pre-shot routine, game plans and how to focus during a round of golf. You will seriously love it, couple spots left if you want to book via the website! I hope to see you there or join us on our other coaching events which can be found below... Enjoy your golf everyone! If you are looking to take your game to the next level and would like to book a lesson with one of the team, please click here to visit the website.
