Hello Golfers,

The World Handicapping system is shortly upon us and this week the Club released the handicap indexes for each golfer, some of you may not have even checked so make sure you check with your respective clubs. For Heysham members, you can log into your account at www.heyshamgolfclub.co.uk and under information you can find a list. The new system is fresh to all of us, so we have put a handy link in below as the UK adopts the new system from November 2nd.

In todays newsletter you can also hear from Ryan as he talks us through some of the success of coaching in the last several weeks including our re-launched Junior Academy. Remember you can bring your child/grandchildren along we have a group for under 10s at 9am and then the older group can come along at 10am! £5 per session with either Trevor or Ryan and we want to get the groups out playing the golf course as soon as possible so they experience golf for real!

There's More to come from winter so don't get down in the dumps about restrictions, tiers, viruses and lockdowns. Get out onto the golf course where we have our winter League coming up, or get into the Lounge for our indoor league, improve your game with our Coaching Team or get practicing on our driving range. Driving Range news

Driving Range Update

The Driving Range usually been open until 8pm until Covid hit meaning that extra cleaning and a lack of the Bar being Open has meant it has stayed closed after the shop has shut. This has been fine during the summer but now with nights coming back we need to get it back operational for our members. So, until the bar opens below is how you can use the range AFTER the Shop closes.

Purchase a token from the shop in the days prior, or the day of it's intended use.
After arriving post 5pm, you will find 5 x baskets available outside the range machine
Please spray down a basket & sanitise your hands prior to collecting your balls
Bring the basket up when finished and spray it again
Balls must be hit BEFORE 8pm when the balls will be collected. (Mon-Fri)

This evening range service will be for HGC members ONLY. Ryan & Trevor may be coaching on the range so anyone having lessons may also get a token in advance. Limited to 50 per person. Ryan/Trevor will not have additional balls on hand to sell. YOU MUST GET A TOKEN IN ADVANCE.

Unfortunately, we do not have enough tokens to hand out several at a time, we hope to address this in the future. So for now, please think/plan ahead for when you would like to use the range in the evening.

Range Helpers Needed.

Whilst on the Driving Range we will need a few volunteers to help the Golf Club keep the range open during the wet parts of winter. To enable us to keep it from closing for prolonged periods, we revert to a 'handpicking' rota. This rota includes myself, Ryan and our usual ball collectors; but we also need 3 or 4 volunteers on top to help with collection. This will mean being flexible and having time to be rota'd in 1 or 2 mornings a week (approx 2 hours each time) to hand pick balls on the range. For this, the golf club will reward your help with FREE range balls for the winter.

The hand picking rota, may not be in place all winter and we only revert to it when the range gets to wet for the machine, hence the flexibility need. Please contact us below to put your name forward!

Coaching News

A word from the Coach...

'With another week done my coaching schedule is still really hectic as I start my winter packages with over 25 players tuning up their games for 2021 and what will hopefully be a full calendar of competitions. Fingers crossed things progress with Covid.

I have used the first few sessions to set objectives and some structure to practice sessions and I've seen some really good progress being made in the early stages of building their swings for 2021.

Good foundations are the key to achieving a solid swing that will stand up to the pressures of a golf course. Using state-of-the-art technology to show players, giving them understanding of their numbers & visuals from video to help them achieve their goals.

A big shout out to Lansil member Andy Barwick who's had a fantastic year halving his handicap from 14 to 7 with an amazing 69 gross last weekend!

Our Junior Section is also going from strength to strength and this Saturday we also had a little Texas Scramble for some of the youngsters doing well enough to get out onto the course! We test their skills weekly and we can boast 5 national Champions & over 20 finalists from these skills events over the years, so we've not done a bad job so far!

And finally I held my lasty Lancashire County Academy session of the year, with a group of 6 from around the county working on all areas of the game in a bootcamp style day. Some great results from this group including 1 lad who has dropped from 17 to 5!!

Bounce made simple

You’ll often hear golf commentators say “the bounce is your friend” but what is ‘bounce’ on a wedge? Well, it refers to the angle of the leading edge and plays an important role in how your wedge interacts with the turf through impact.

As the image shows above, the higher the wedge bounce the more the leading edge is off the ground and pointing upwards.

But how does this help you? Well, having the correct bounce for the course conditions and your swing type will offer additional forgiveness and promote a better strike, which is something that we can talk you through more in-store.

One thing we will say is that getting the correct bounce - as well as grind and loft - on any new wedges is really important.
